If you're anything like us, exercise is hard enough at the best of times, but when the weather closes in, and it's cold and wet outside, keeping fit can be that much harder. After all, who wants to get out of bed when it's cozy and warm inside?

But just as keeping fit 12 months of the year is important for us (yes, even during winter), it's also important for pups! To help you stay motivated on the cold winter days, here are 5 ways to keep your dog fit and active this winter.

1. Walk in winter

You may not feel like it, but it's important to continue taking your pup for walks throughout the cooler months. So why not recruit your whole family and go explore the great outdoors this winter?! Even if it is cold, the walk will do the world of good to everyone.  For you and your two-legged family members – it’s a great way to exercise, reduce stress, lowers blood pressure and improves your overall fitness. And for pup, it increases their fitness, decreases the risk of obesity and will assist with maintaining good behaviour (think less digging, chewing on furniture – basically less destruction). Plus, sticking to your winter walking regime gives you a good excuse to pick out some warm designer threads for your pooch (and you). For some of the best available in stores right now, click here

2. Throw a (glow-in-the-dark) ball

For extra activity head to your back yard or local park and throw a ball for your pup - you'll warm up quickly if you work at it and your dog will love the interaction and exercise. Of course, it gets dark earlier in the winter so, if you’re playing fetch outdoors in the evening we recommend investing in one of these glow in the dark dog balls - perfect for playing in low light conditions!

3. Hide and Seek

If we can't tempt you outside, there's still plenty of ways to engage and interact with your pup indoors. Hide and seek is always fun (especially if the thing you're looking for is right there and your poor pup still can’t see it!) so why not try hiding their favourite toy or a treat and let your dog look for it. This is a great form of enrichment for your pup and will keep them entertained. For another easy enrichment idea, click here

4. Go Gadget

These days there is plenty of tech designed to keep your dog fit. We particularly love this awesome gadget – Ifetch Frenzy - which sets your dog up for a few hours of fun by throwing mini balls around for you pup to fetch, leaving you free to snuggle up under a blanket and stream Netflix!

5. Doggy play dates

Dogs love to socialise (as do we!), so why not invite over some friends with their dogs and let the pup pals entertain each other while you enjoy a hot beverage! And, if none of your own buddies own dogs, don't fret - there's an app for that! Download Dog Share and connect with other local dog owners for doggy play dates!
