    PROGRAM OVERVIEW

    This 7 month* course will equip you with the knowledge and skills required to be a master in dog training. Combining theory and plenty of hands-on training, you will be certified to conduct both one-on-one and group dog obedience and training classes for dogs and puppies.

    You can expect to gain an in-depth understanding on a wide range of dog training techniques and the canine psychology and physiology that makes these skills effective.

    Hanrob Dog Training Academy has been providing dog obedience and detector dog training services in Sydney, Melbourne and Internationally since 1990. We are a Registered Training Organisation (RTO – 70236) delivering educational programs with nationally recognised qualifications. Our educational programs are of the highest standards possible, taught by our nationally renowned instructors with 50+ years combined experience, guaranteeing you the best service available. 

    The course is flexible depending on your work load and can be completed in less than 500 hours. There is a good balance between written and practical assessments with an intensive three week face-to-face component.

    THEORY

    The theoretical component is essential in gaining a solid foundation behind dog psychology, behaviour modification, dog training principles and canine care. Some core competencies you will gain include:

    • Conducting companion animal training classes
    • Providing training advice to companion animal owners
    • Identifying and responding to animal behaviour
    • Developing enrichment strategies for companion animals
    • Maintaining and monitoring animal health and well-being
    • Planning and providing nutritional requirements for animals
    • Rescuing animals and applying basic first aid
    practical

    PRACTICAL

    These workshops will solidify your knowledge by applying the theoretical knowledge learned in the first two weeks at IDA. You will have practical dog training at the IDA facility and then spend the next 5 months building on your dog handling/training skills at an external facility.

    You will be required to keep track of your practical hours in a log book and source the external facility yourself.

    This flexible course is designed to give you the freedom to complete the course at your own pace. The self-paced learning proponent will enable you to strengthen your knowledge through the completion of three distance learning workbooks.

    Our assessments are tests that meet the National Assessment Principles of validity, reliability, flexibility and fairness. We use practicals, knowledge quizzes and interviews in our assessments with plenty of practice through the workplace field practice log books.

    Ken Innes – Training & Education Manager

    Ken Innes has been delivering dog training and technical instruction since 1997. He has trained dogs and handlers for various applications for clients from the private, corporate and domestic and international government sectors. Ken has held the position of National Trainer for Australian Quarantine Inspection Services from 2008 to 2013 and has since continued to develop and deliver courses for Hanrob’s clients under the standards of the RTO.

    Jenn Bennett – Senior Instructor

    Jenn is renowned for her ability to break down complex concepts and skills. She is also a qualified TAE instructor for the Companion Animal Services Certificate IV qualification. Since 2012, Jenn has been heavily involved in the process of IDA becoming registered and ensuring that all compliance is maintained within the RTO.

    Lee Bulman – Trainer

    Lee has had an active involvement and passion for animals all of her life and has worked professionally with dogs for the past five years, working at Hanrob as a trainer since 2013. Lee commenced her career working as a Clinical Assistant, Animal Attendant and Shelter Attendant in a number of countries overseas in a variety of dog shelters to fundraise, assist and support dogs living in harsh conditions. Lee is now a qualified Dog Trainer and also works as a Senior Dog Handler/ Assistant Trainer for a reputable Doggy Day Care.

    Wayne Grewar – Senior Instructor

    Wayne has 24 years’ experience as both an operational handler and trainer with a wide variety of disciplines including obedience/agility, detection and security. For 10 years, Wayne has been involved in the training of both handlers and dogs and employment of dogs in support of non-conventional counter terrorism operations with the Army Explosive Detection Dogs. Since Wayne has been with Hanrob, he provides training and instruction for all programs.

    Mel Ward-Miles – Trainer

    A life-time animal lover, Mel worked for the NSW Police Dog Unit and has been involved in the animal industry since 2006. Companion and working dog trainer, veterinary nurse and mammalian zookeeper are just some of the roles she has enjoyed throughout the industry. Mel has a love for German Shepherds – Asira is her four year old pride and joy.

    The assessments are a combination of written examinations, take home assignments, distance learning workbooks and practical assessments.
